PC Magazine - Security Watch: Android Antivirus Protection Even Better After Latest Round of Testing

By Max Eddy

Security company AV-Test has released its latest snapshot of Android security, after subjecting 30 popular security apps to a battery of tests. These tests are a great way to see how antivirus apps for Android are really performing.

AV-Test's point scheme means that an app needs to do much more than simply detect malware. An app that aces that test only gets six points out of a total of 13. An app can earn up to six more points for usability, which AV-Test defines as not affecting battery life, sucking CPU time, false positives, or generally being a nuisance. Finally, an app can earn a bonus point for including additional security features like anti-theft, call blockers, and so on. Each app is subjected to what AV-Test calls a "real-world review" of 2,326 malicious apps.

This round of testing saw several new arrivals, including Baidu Mobile Security, G-Protector Anti Virus Utility, Trustlook Antivirus, VisualThreat ThreatCert, and White Gate AntiVirus.
