Computer viruses have existed for many, many years. In the early days, detection was a simple matter of matching files against a known set of signatures. Some antivirus programs even included a list of all the threats they could detect. Things are quite different these days, with malware writers working hard to create malware that morphs and evolves so it can't be caught by signature-based detection. I spoke with Roger Thompson, Chief Emerging Threat Researcher for ICSA Labs, about how anti-malware programs need to change, and how testing of these products needs to change.
