Cybercriminals have found that targeted attacks are often more lucrative, and more predictable, than throwing malware at the Web to see where it sticks. Instead the attacker collects information about the target and leverages it to break through existing controls. Defense requires security managers to identify and manage potential sources of information, look for weaknesses not identified when designing and implementing traditional controls, and implement additional safeguards to deal with the changing threat landscape.
